Your life is only as good as the quality of your thoughts.
You may have a pretty decent life, but if you bombard yourself with negative thoughts you will make yourself miserable. Our misery or happiness depends largely on what we tell ourselves, not necessarily on our circumstances.
Using Positive Self-Talk
Do you feel like you are always talking yourself out of happiness? As soon as you start to set goals for yourself, do you suddenly have nagging thoughts about how you are not up to the task or how you simply are not qualified to carry it through? Even worse, you tell yourself that you are stupid, that you are not worth it, that your situation is hopeless? Change the way you respond to your inner dialogue. Instead of obeying your negative commands or even pay attention to them, use positive self-talk to counter the negativity.
Setting Goals and Sticking to Them with Positive Self-Talk
Self-doubt and self-defeating thoughts can stop you in your tracks. It can be frustrating and discouraging to have these thoughts constantly plaguing you. Many of us, in fact, don’t even realize we have defeating thoughts! All we know is that we don’t have the confidence to stick to our plans and feel good about ourselves.
Positive self-talk is an effective way to set goals and ensure that you stick to them, even if you have never been able to do this before.
First, decide what goal is important to you, and then plan the logistics of how you are going to get there. When self-doubt starts kicking in, respond with affirmations that prove your success without surrendering to the negative pressure. Repeat until it works! Some people say “it does not work for me.” Those people may expect to to the the gym, lift weights once, and have great muscles. Exercise your mind daily and you will see the results.
Re-Programming Your Mind
Affirmations are essentially positive statements that re-program your mind for the positive. You may not be aware of the severity of the negative dialogue currently within your mind. The moment you have a self-defeating thought, counter the negative with a motivating statement. An example of a positive affirmation is: “I am worthy of success,” or “I am lovable.” Replace negativity with thoughts that help you move toward your goals instead of further away from them.
Use statements in the positive. Instead of saying “I am not worthless,” affirm: “I am worth it.”
Learning to quiet negativity with positive thoughts is possibly the most important exercise you can do to improve your life.
