CPA Launching New Task Force to Inform Strategic Direction on Advanced Practice Physiotherapy in Canada – Apply by Aug 25!
Aug 07, 2025
CALL TO ACTION: Apply to be part of the CPA’s Advanced Practice Physiotherapy Task Force!

DEADLINE TO APPLY: August 25, 2025, 11:59 PM EDT
Why is the CPA undertaking this work?
Advanced practice physiotherapy (APP) is a rapidly growing area of practice that is having a growing impact on healthcare systems in Canada and worldwide. In 2023, World Physiotherapy (WP) released a position on the development of advanced practice roles. As a WP member organization, the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) is committed to advancing this conversation in Canada on behalf of the profession.
The CPA recognizes the work already taking place across Canada related to APP, including definitions and competencies. It is important that the definition of APP is objective, informed by the profession, supports the future advancement of the profession, and aligns with the needs of the health care system. To support this work — similar to the work done to define national scope of practice — the CPA will be striking an APP Task Force group in summer 2025.
The Task Force will:
- Include perspectives from across the profession, with representation from Branches, Divisions, academia, research, and individuals not a part of an academic or private training program (non-partisan) for advanced practice.
- Seek input from internal and external stakeholders, such as the broader physiotherapy community, regulators, other professions, and health system leaders.
- Review proposed APP definitions and competency frameworks, alongside relevant research inputs and consultation findings.
- Provide recommendations to the CPA CEO and Board regarding the endorsement of a definition, potential modifications, and next steps.
